Genetic Health Insights for Tannah Poodles

Understanding the intricacies of genetic testing is crucial when considering a Poodle companion. Here's a comprehensive overview of our testing procedures and the genetic factors we assess:

Testing Variances Between Standard and Miniature Poodles:

  • All our Breeding Standard Poodles undergo hip testing, whereas this is not a requirement for Miniature Poodles.

  • Miniature Poodles can be prone to slipping patellas, unfortunately this condition currently lacks a specific test.

Comprehensive DNA Testing:

  • All dogs in our breeding program are either DNA tested or cleared by parentage.

  • While some genetic diseases lack a DNA test, our comprehensive breed profile covers all available tests, performed by Orivet Genetic Pet Care.

  • Renal Dysplasia (RD) testing is conducted by DOGenes in Canada.

Hip Score Testing:

  • Conducted mostly by Dr. John Hamilton at Avonsleigh Veterinary Centre, though some owners opt for their own vets.

  • Sebaceous adenitis testing is performed as needed by Dr. John Hamilton.

Diseases and Traits We Screen For Include:

  • Congenital Macrothrombocytopenia

  • Elliptocytosis B-Spectrin (Labrador Retriever/Poodle Type)

  • Osteochondrodysplasia (Min Poodle Type)

  • Degenerative Myelopathy

  • Mucopolysaccharidosis

  • Neonatal Encephalopathy

  • rcd4-PRA (Late Onset)

  • Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration (PRA-PRCD)

  • Von Willebrand's Disease Type I

  • Elliptocytosis (B-Spectrin)

  • Renal Dysplasia

  • Sebaceous Adenitis (No DNA Test)

  • Follicular Dysplasia

Traits for Colour and Marking Classification Include:

  • EM (MC1R) Locus - Melanistic Mask I Locus Colour Intensity

  • Brown (345DELPRO) Deletion

  • Brown (GLNT331STOP) Stop Codon

  • Brown (SER41CYS) Insertion Codon Liver [TYRP1] (Lancashire Heeler Type)

  • A-Locus Agouti

  • B (TYRP1 Locus) Brown/Chocolate

  • Dilute MLPH Gene (Blue/Grey)

  • K-Locus (DOM Black/Wild Type)

  • EM-Locus Melanistic Mask Allele

  • E (Extension) Locus MC1R

  • Curly Coat Phenotype

  • Polydactyl/Dewclaws

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in Miniatures:

  • PRA is more common in Miniatures than Standards.

  • The primary test for Miniatures is the PRA test, with A (clear) and B (carrier) grades. We aim for A grades but accept A to B.

Other Considerations:

  • No official test for slipping patellas; vets assess during routine health checks.

  • Random testing for Sebaceous Adenitis (SA), with no reported cases in our bred puppies.

  • Renal Dysplasia (RD) testing, though not required by the Poodle Club of Victoria, is undertaken for thorough knowledge.

Feel free to contact us for more information on RD testing or any other inquiries you may have. We are committed to transparency and the health of our Poodle community.
